Council accepts $25,000 county grant for six-month community composting pilot

Council accepted a $25,000 Special Project Grant from the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District to pilot a community composting drop-off program in University Heights.
Mrs. Bremer-Fisher described the plan: the city will provide five centralized bins at Walter Stinson Community Park, promote the program via mailed postcards to all households, and contract Rust Belt Riders for biweekly pickup. Rust Belt Riders’ proposed service for the five bins is $3,680 per month (about $22,080 for six months); additional grant funds will support promotion, signage, and cart/corral materials. The pilot will be free to participating residents; Rust Belt Riders will register participants and existing users (78 households were cited as currently participating in the county program) will qualify for the free six-month pilot.
MOTION by Mr. King, seconded by Mrs. Sax, to accept the grant; Council voted unanimously in favor. The administration will run the pilot in spring/summer 2025, collect participation data and metrics, and report back to Council to decide whether to include ongoing composting in the FY2026 budget.
