Orangeville council adopts budget amendments, approves wages and utility credit

The Orangeville City Council on March 12 adopted Resolution 2026-3, approving amendments to the city’s FY25–26 general fund, municipal building authority, capital projects, utility, perpetual care and Class C fund budgets following a public hearing and staff review.

Council members said the adjustments reflected recommendations from the city accountant and were intended to realign planned spending. "Gary, our accountant, came on and went over some adjustments that we need to make," a council member said during the public hearing. After brief discussion the council approved the resolution by voice vote.

The council also approved a budgeted wage increase for city employee Richard Miles, raising his pay to $15 per hour. Council members described the raise as a planned, budgeted step and voted to adopt it. In the same block of routine business the council approved a proposal to place a credit on Richard Cox’s utility account after staff determined his residence is inside city limits and had been charged at the county rate; Cox later told the council he did not want a personal reimbursement but members agreed a credit in good faith was appropriate.

Other procedural items adopted included approvals of two business licenses and the routine approval of bills of warrants and minutes. Council members did not identify offsets or specific line-item reductions tied to Resolution 2026-3 during the meeting; staff had previously presented details in the public hearing.

The council directed staff to follow up on the utility-credit processing and to provide documentation related to the budget amendment at the next meeting. No legal authorities were cited in detail during the vote beyond the resolution number discussed in open session.

The meeting moved on to other agenda items after the votes; the council adjourned later in the evening.
