The Tomah Public Works Commission heard on June 24 that the municipal sewer system experienced a bar-screen bearing failure that required multiple replacement parts and several days of contractor labor.
According to the sewer departmental report, average flow for May was about 1.3 million gallons per day. Staff said the bearing failure led to the replacement of four sprockets and two chains and roughly four days of labor by their mechanical contractor, Sable. "As Sable took it apart, we believe there were parts missing from the factory which caused the bearing to fail," the report said; staff added they are working with the vendor to seek some contribution for the parts and labor because the replacement components are sourced from Germany and are expected to be costly.
The department also said the silo repainting project is scheduled to begin the second week of July. Commissioners did not vote on repairs at this meeting; staff indicated they will continue maintenance and follow up with the vendor regarding cost responsibility.
