Planning commission asks staff to study data center impacts, placing water and power on future agenda

Commissioner Kevin Jensen raised informal inquiries the county has received about potential data center development and the Planning and Zoning Commission discussed general issues to research prior to any application.
Commissioners and staff identified key concerns including electrical demand and generation requirements, long-term water consumption and availability, land-use compatibility, on-site natural gas for backup generation, fiber-optic infrastructure, and potential impacts on local roads and communities. Jim Jennings noted current zoning does not include data-center-specific standards and that proactive review of regulations would be prudent.
Chair Gary Arrington requested that staff place Data Center Development and Water Consumption on a future Planning Commission agenda so the commission can consider policy or ordinance adjustments before formal proposals arrive. No formal action was taken during the June 10 meeting.
