The Troutdale City Council approved a resolution authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with Metro to install and operate a sharps collection box at the sheriff’s office entry. Staff explained the collection pilot is funded by Metro and would use a third‑party contractor to maintain the box for four years; if Metro funding ends after the pilot, the city would not be obligated to continue the service unless council chooses to do so.
Staff (Ryan Lagera) explained the box will be a bolted, mailbox‑style drop box located to the right of the sheriff’s office entry and that Metro’s funding will pay the vendor that collects and disposes of needles produced by residents for medical reasons. Councilors asked whether the city would incur costs after the pilot; staff replied the pilot is funded through leftover Metro monies and the city would only take on ongoing costs if the council decided to continue and adopt a separate agreement later.
Council action: After the public comment period, council held a roll call and approved the resolution for the Metro sharps collection pilot.
