Board raises outreach and sustainability topics: event promotion, construction recycling and mobility

Board members used the June 30 meeting to press staff on outreach for volunteer events, to ask about construction and demolition waste recycling, and to propose a future agenda discussion on mobility and public transportation options.
A board member asked why some events were not well attended and sought clarity on how residents are notified. Staff said the board and city use multiple channels: Eventbrite for volunteer sign-ups, city ETV screens at City Hall and the train station, Nextdoor, Mailchimp email lists (staff said the list has roughly 1,000 subscribers), social media, and physical flyers posted at community locations. Staff also noted a live interview on Fox that did not noticeably increase participation for the decorate-your-doorstep contest.
On construction and demolition waste, a committee member asked whether the board or city could do more to encourage reuse and diversion. Staff said the city has an ordinance requiring registered haulers at commercial construction and demolition sites to recycle material (with monthly reporting to staff to verify deliveries to recycling facilities) and that staff inspect and may fine haulers for violations. Staff encouraged reporting suspected noncompliance with photos to prompt inspections.
Committee member speaker 4 proposed the board examine public-transportation options—such as the mobility hub (rideshare/EV charging), Links buses, e-bikes and scooter programs—as sustainable measures to ease parking and traffic. Staff said mobility and transportation are included in the city’s sustainability action plan and suggested placing a non-action discussion item on the August agenda after board members have had a chance to review the 2022 strategic plan currently available on the city website; staff said updated 2023–24 versions will be published soon.
Board members agreed the August meeting may be a better forum for a transportation discussion given a packed July agenda that will include officer elections, orientation videos and photo-contest voting.
