Chair introduced Andrea Lilly, who presented the second reading of a set of board policy updates including policy 3000 (goals and objectives), new 3101 (dual enrollment), 3102 (online instruction), updates to curriculum and lesson-planning policies, homework policy 3115, instructional materials policy 3032, and parental inspection policy 3210. Andrea Lilly said these items will "lay on the table" until the board’s next meeting for a third and final reading.
Later in the meeting a board member moved that the Martin County Board of Education enter closed session "pursuant to North Carolina general statute 143-318.11(a)(1) and (a)(6) ... to prevent the disclosure of confidential personnel information... and to consider matters relating to initial employment of an individual employee," and also cited consulting with the board’s attorney and FERPA provisions for confidential student matters. The motion to enter closed session was seconded and the board voted in favor, with no recorded opposition.
An agency official also provided back-to-school announcements: convocation for the 2024–25 school year was described as "phenomenal," open house for all schools was announced for the week of Aug. 22 with a correction that the first day of school is Monday, Aug. 26, and parents were reminded that back-to-school paperwork and transportation requests are available online.
A committee member offered public praise for Sarah Stalls’ convocation remarks. The meeting concluded when the chair entertained and the board approved a motion to adjourn.
The meeting recorded procedure and scheduling actions rather than adoption of the policies presented; policy changes will return for a third reading.
