Mount Airy City Board of Education approves discretionary admissions, field trips, solar-grant and MOU

The Mount Airy City Board of Education voted to approve several routine and programmatic items at its July 12, 2025 retreat at district headquarters, including discretionary admissions, field trips and fundraisers, a BHT solar panel grant and a memorandum of understanding with Surry Medical Ministries’ mobile unit.

Kyle Leonard moved to approve the discretionary admissions item and Randy Moore seconded. The motion carried on a roll-call vote recorded in the retreat minutes. Ben Cooke moved approval of the listed field trips and fundraisers, seconded by Mark Welch; that motion also carried. Kyle Leonard moved and Ben Cooke seconded approval of the BHT Solar Panel Grant as presented; the board recorded that approval by roll call. Ben Cooke moved and Jayme Brant seconded approval of the Surry Medical Ministries Mobile Unit Memorandum of Understanding; the minutes note that approval is "pending final review."

The board entered closed session at 12:28 p.m. under the exemptions cited in Chapter 132 of the General Statutes to consider privileged/confidential information and personnel matters, and returned to open session at 1:17 p.m. Immediately after returning, Ben Cooke moved and Jayme Brant seconded approval of the Personnel Report as presented; the motion was approved by roll call.

The actions were taken during a retreat agenda that also included an Innovation Spotlight presentation, strategic-planning topics and a working lunch. The meeting record shows the retreat convened at 8:00 a.m. and adjourned at 1:20 p.m.
