Superintendent reports water-line damage at middle school; district outlines construction timelines

Spearfish School District Superintendent Godlove told the board July 13 that a July 1 water-service break created substantial interior damage and left the middle school without consistent water service.
“Our goal would be that water will be restored later this week,” Godlove said, describing a failed six-inch water main and interior washout that moved mud into the building. Godlove thanked facilities staff, singling out Josh Gerhold for cleanup and emergency response work.
The board heard that while some parts of the campus have water—training rooms, the high school and locker rooms—the middle school remains without water as crews stabilize the service line. Godlove said the break occurred inside the building but that the district is coordinating repairs to the service line coming from outside the building.
Board members also received a construction update. Godlove reported that work on the large “Mammoth” project has resumed and that drainage plans related to the district’s ditch and the city storm sewer have been submitted to the city for engineer review. “Once those are city-ready, we are gonna take those to the city and look for engineer approved plans at which point our board can consider timeline to move ahead,” Godlove said.
Mountain View construction advanced over the last week, Godlove said, with curb and gutter installed and the water-line tie-in and fire-protection (PIV) completed; fire suppression is ready. Substantial completion for that project is scheduled for Aug. 21, with final completion and punch-list work expected by Sept. 21.
Godlove also updated the board on a nearly finished playground renovation at Creekside, noting the new poured surface improves accessibility for mobility-impaired students. He said some maintenance cleanup remains.
On enrollment, Godlove said full-time student enrollment—excluding part-time and out-of-district students—was about 2,280 and that more complete figures would appear in weekly updates leading into August.
The board did not take any additional formal action on these infrastructure updates at the meeting; staff were directed to continue coordinating repairs and to provide updated schedules and cost information to the board.
