Board approves 2026–27 pay scales for principals, teachers and specialists

The Southampton County School Board approved the recommended 2026–27 salary scales covering principals, assistant principals, instructional specialists, teachers and other certified positions; administration said scales align with the board‑approved operating budget for 2026–27.
The board voted to adopt new salary scales for the 2026–27 school year that establish compensation bands for chief positions, principals (elementary, middle, high), assistant principals, instructional specialists, deans, supervisors and teachers.
Superintendent Dr. Thompson presented the recommendation, saying the scales "establish compensation based on years of experience and position, providing a consistent and equitable framework for employee compensation across the division." She said the proposed scales support recruitment and retention and are aligned with the board‑approved 2026–27 operating budget.
Board members asked whether additional position scales (for positions currently without scales) would be brought forward; Dr. Thompson said administration will continue work on scales for other job classifications and return with recommendations.
A motion to approve the payroll scales carried by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The board will implement the scales for the 2026–27 year and administration will present remaining position scales as they are developed.
