Lyme Recreation Commission approves one‑year trial of All‑Star baseball team

The Lyme Recreation Commission voted April 27 to approve a one‑year trial of a Lyme Recreation All‑Star baseball team intended to retain Cal Ripken–level players and reduce the need for families to join external club programs. Kerri Gandin proposed the initiative during the commission’s meeting, arguing it would help keep players in Lyme’s local program.

The proposal noted that All‑Star teams must operate under a formal charter; Lyme teams previously participated under the Twin Rivers charter but now each team maintains its own charter. Commission member Dina Cutting reported she had consulted the insurance provider about whether coverage would apply if the All‑Star team operated outside direct Recreation Commission oversight. Estimated participation costs were discussed at roughly $100–$150 per player, and the commission noted financial assistance would be available through the Boosters for families in need.

Commissioner Michael Hinsley moved to approve a one‑year trial of the All‑Star program with the goal of including as many participants as possible; Commissioner Ashley Luurtsema seconded the motion. The motion passed with three votes in favor and one opposed. Approval was made contingent on sufficient family participation and appropriate insurance arrangements.

The commission did not set a start date in the meeting; next steps include confirming charter and insurance details and coordinating participation and any needed financial assistance from the Boosters. The commission will revisit the program after the trial year to decide on continuation or changes.
