Logansport board declares 607 West Broadway an unsafe, nuisance and abandoned property

The Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety voted July 15 to declare 607 West Broadway an unsafe, nuisance and abandoned property and set specific remediation deadlines after hearing a history of ordinance violations and unsafe conditions from code enforcement.

Randy of the code enforcement office told the board the property ‘‘has a history of ordinance violations’’ including overgrown weeds, piles of wood, broken windows and an unsecured structure; the board was told people had been able to access the building. Randy said the property ‘‘is in a state of abandonment’’ and described an assessment checklist used to determine the designation.

Under the board’s action, the owner must complete general cleanup within 15 days and secure the building and register it as a vacant property with the building department within 30 days. The board warned that failure to comply could result in a $500 fine, cleanup at the owner’s expense and possible additional enforcement; the board scheduled a 30‑day reevaluation of the property.

The owner present said he had materials ready and expected to finish the work in two to three weeks; the board emphasized coordination with the building department to ensure required permits and registration are completed. Mayor Jacob Palmasol moved the motion to declare the property a nuisance and abandoned; members voted to approve the resolution.

What happens next: Code enforcement and the building department will follow up to verify cleanup and vacancy registration; if the owner fails to comply, the board may order city cleanup and assess costs and fines.
