The City of Mebane on Jan. 6 approved a construction contract to repair the subfloor structure at the old recreation-center gym. Staff reported Stonewall Construction Services was the low bidder at $160,700; staff recommended awarding the base plus an alternate and adding a $14,300 contingency for a total project budget of $175,000.
Franz Holt (S12) reviewed the bid process, the structural engineer’s findings (which concluded the building meets active‑loading requirements but needs girder and pier work to support maintenance activity), and the scope of repair work. Holt and staff said the work was not expected to fully level the floor but would address sags and allow safer maintenance access.
A council member moved to award the contract to Stonewall Construction Services for the $160,700 base plus alternate and to include the $14,300 contingency; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
Why it matters: the repairs preserve city recreational infrastructure, improve safety and enable maintenance access that previously was restricted.
What’s next: staff will execute the contract and proceed with construction under the approved project budget.
