MEBANE — The City of Mebane on April 7 agreed to schedule a public hearing for May 5 to consider making the Downtown Mebane Social District permanent and adding 204 North 5th Street to the district.
Laura Schafer, executive director of the Downtown Mebane Development Corporation, presented the annual update, saying the district launched June 28 under a one‑year ordinance modeled on other programs and that a DMDC survey of downtown merchants showed roughly 85% support among respondents. She told the council there have been no public‑safety incidents reported inside the district and that DMDC and participating businesses split the cost of the district’s branded cups and signage.
Schafer asked council to set a public hearing to consider both continuing the district on a permanent basis and expanding the boundary to include a building occupied by Shuffle and Roll at 204 N. 5th St. The council voted to set a May 5 public hearing to consider the requests.
If adopted after the hearing, expansion would add the indicated property to the district; individual businesses may opt in or out of the program without additional council action.
