Argo CHSD 217 honors teacher Jacqueline Finley, student artists and athletes ahead of graduation
Summary
The board recognized teacher Jacqueline Finley with an Illinois State University Alumni Excellence in Teacher Award, announced Congressional Art Award winners including Natalia Stanibula whose piece will hang in the U.S. Capitol, awarded the IL Seal of Biliteracy to bilingual students and celebrated regional track champions and state qualifiers.
At the May 20 meeting Argo Community High School highlighted staff and student achievements ahead of graduation.
Jacqueline Finley was recognized with the Illinois State University Alumni Excellence in Teacher Award for her work in mathematics and contributions to the school's professional learning community. The board also announced winners of the 6th District Congressional Art Awards: senior Natalia Stanibula won first place for an embroidered photograph titled "Melting Pot," which will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year; senior Mia Gutierrez placed third for her photograph "Rewired." Natalia described creating the piece to reflect her Polish-American background and said she used embroidery and a fisheye lens to represent cultural curiosity. Mia said she "has been studying how social media affects young minds" and presented a wide-angle image wrapped in wires to symbolize how phones can "rewire" neural pathways.
Athletic recognitions included Alyna Salamanca (High Jump champion) and Aliyah Cummings (Triple Jump champion) at the SSC Red Division championships, plus Dalia Garcia and Darionna Grimes qualifying for IHSA state competition (pole vault and discus respectively). The board also congratulated members of the bilingual Argonauts for earning the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy, to be awarded at graduation.
