Bike Brighton subcommittee raises safety concern about Ride of Silence route; staff to contact police

At its April 8 meeting, the City of Brighton Bike Brighton Sub-Committee expressed concern that the planned May 20 Ride of Silence route could proceed without police presence and directed staff member Amanda Aburto to contact the Brighton Police Department and request confirmation by April 15, 2026.

Committee members reviewed upcoming rides, including a First Full Moon “Flower Moon” ride on May 1 and a Full Moon ride on May 31. The committee recorded a preliminary attendee list for the May 1 ride (Rashelle Chappelle, Joe Arp, Kathy Vickery, Christina Livingston, David McWilliams and potentially Nick Lindsey) and noted that Amanda Aburto had emailed the May 1 route and was awaiting a GIS image (JPG) to circulate to participants.

Members flagged a specific safety concern for the Ride of Silence on May 20: meeting notes state "concerns about the route were brought up due to potential of no police presence." Amanda Aburto said she would contact the Brighton Police Department again and give the department until April 15 to respond; if the department does not reply, staff will plan a safer alternate route and email the committee the revised plan.

The committee also discussed participation logistics for moon‑related rides and will revisit the May 31 5.6‑mile route at the next meeting. No formal motion captured a change to any route at this meeting; the direction was a staff follow‑up.

The subcommittee meets monthly at the MSC Building; next meeting is scheduled for May 13, 2026.
