The Waterloo Local treasurer summarized December financial statements at the Jan. 9 meeting, reporting a December loss of about $450,000 for the general and emergency funds and a year-to-date all-funds deficit of approximately $577,000. The treasurer said the timing of bond payments in November contributed to month-to-month fluctuations but warned the district will likely show a negative number when January financials are posted.
The treasurer identified recent outlays: $25,000 to update the fuel management system for district vehicles, $23,000 to Southway Fence Company for track work (the district’s foundation is expected to reimburse that amount), and $12,453 for annual workers’ compensation. The board subsequently approved the December financials by roll call.
On superintendent recommendations, the board approved partnership agreements to support student-teacher placements (Youngstown State), College Credit Plus programming (Kent State), outsourced student services (LearnWell), and an outsourced speech-language pathologist (SLP) contract to fill a shortage in-house. The board also approved asking the superintendent to issue substitute contracts to three individuals, accepted the resignation of Jasmine Wilhelm effective Jan. 7, and approved the junior/high course guides for 2025–26 and the 2025–26 and 2026–27 school calendars.
The board approved a resolution to administer Ohio’s required third-grade reading assessments in paper-and-pencil format next school year after members discussed logistics and potential cost implications. Members asked whether paper testing would raise costs; the treasurer and others said the district would manage logistics and that passing the resolution allows the district to proceed with necessary procurement and planning.
The board accepted a $500 donation from Sergeant Chevrolet to support the Waterloo theater program and discussed supervision and scheduling for upcoming performances.
The meeting closed business items and approved a motion to enter executive session to discuss employment matters.
Votes on these items were recorded by roll call in the meeting transcript.
