The Skowhegan Select Board voted to table an application by Cavalier Marketing and Sales, a business listed at an out-of-state address, to operate a pop-up precious-metals sale at a local motel during Fair Week (proposed dates August 13–18).
Town staff said the application had been delayed in the mail and that attempts by board staff to reach the applicant had yielded inconsistent responses. Select board member Gail said she had called the listed phone number multiple times and received no response; the town manager said Karen Sailors had been in contact with the applicant but details remained unclear.
Board members asked whether the town has an applicable ordinance governing pawnbrokers and precious-metals dealers and whether similar businesses had been approved in the past. The board decided to table the application until members have had time to read the relevant ordinance and staff can contact the applicant for clarification. "Because we are just seeing this for the first time tonight, I'd like to move we table this till we have a chance to read the ordinance and just understand whether this is legit," a select board member said.
The board asked staff to follow up and to place the item on a future agenda with any additional information about licensing, local compliance and verification of the applicant's business status.
