The City of Prescott on July 14 amended its public‑comment process for the Prescott Rodeo master plan so that the public will have a 45‑day comment window beginning Aug. 5, with an open house that day, a public hearing Aug. 25 and an anticipated council vote Oct. 13.
City staff said the amendment (an update to resolution 20231862) ensures the public will comment on the same, final draft rather than multiple interim versions. “That amendment... includes a public meeting, like an open house. It includes a public hearing, and it would get us to a vote in October 13 at that council meeting,” staff explained.
During public comment, several residents asked for transparent accounting of $15 million in sales tax dollars that have been set aside for rodeo‑grounds work. One commenter said, “This is $15,000,000 of our money... This money should be used to spend on things that everyone in the community wants, not just a small number of people.” Council voted 7–0 to adopt the amendment and open the comment period.
On a separate, related item, council reviewed the revised design and bids for relocating and installing the century‑old rodeo horse statue at the Rodeo grounds. Staff described protective siting, solar lighting and temporary watering to establish plantings. After discussion about design quality and bid contents, council approved a purchase order with R and E Sons for $70,777.11 for the installation (vote 6–1). Councilmembers discussed materials, lighting and a preference for a more detailed installation scope over the lowest bid.
What happens next: the master‑plan open house is scheduled for Aug. 5 and staff will post final drafts and accept public comment for 45 days; staff will oversee statue installation once contractors mobilize.
