Urbana commission approves Jose Vasquez to paint mural on 115 West Main

The Urbana Arts and Culture Commission voted July 14 to approve Jose Vasquez as the artist for a new mural on the prominent blank wall at 115 West Main, following a recommendation from a seven-member review committee.

Staff said the committee selected Vasquez because he demonstrated technical experience with challenging surfaces and a track record of community-based mural projects. "The committee recommends Jose Vasquez," Interim Arts and Culture Coordinator Rachel Storm told commissioners, noting his experience working with unusual wall textures and lift equipment.

The committee reviewed five finalists on June 25 and considered criteria including artistic excellence, experience with large-scale murals, technical capacity, community engagement and feasibility. Storm said the artist was chosen for his ability to combine bold, colorful work with a community storytelling process.

Commissioners asked about the installation timeline; Storm said the goal is to have primary painting complete in September or by early October so the mural is in place before downtown fall festivals. On a motion recorded by staff as moved by Robert White and seconded by Abby Harris, the commission conducted a roll-call vote. Commissioners listed in the roll call and voting record were Barbara Hedlund, Abby Harris, Hannah Andresen, Robert White, Sarah Buckman, Xander Hazel and Ty Lewis; staff recorded each as voting yes and the motion passed.

Storm said staff will return with updates next month on contracts, timeline details and community engagement plans for the design and painting process. The commission did not record any amendments to the committee recommendation at the meeting.
