Waterloo Local leaders praise student response to fire drill, announce October countywide emergency exercise

A staff member told the Waterloo Local Board of Education that the district’s first fire drill of the year went smoothly, with students and staff evacuating promptly and school resource officers on site to assist. “Everyone is always highly complimentary of how seriously our students and how seriously our staff take the drills,” the staff member said.
The staff member said typical evacuations take about three minutes from alarm to accounted-for status and described a short deliberate pause at the start of the alarm to ensure there is no competing hazard before evacuation begins. The board heard that these procedures are intended to ensure teachers can locate missing students and that accountability checks are completed outside the building.
Looking ahead, the staff member announced the district will participate in a larger, staff-day emergency exercise in October that will simulate a more serious incident and include Orange County Emergency Management Agency and other regional support services. The October event will not include students and is intended to build mutual-aid planning between nearby schools so one site can assist another during a large incident.
Board Chair underlined the emphasis on safety, saying the district conducts post-drill debriefs with first responders to learn and improve procedures. “You can’t learn, you can’t do anything, you’re not safe,” the Chair said, summing up the board’s focus.
District officials also reviewed related safety exercises: an elementary-level bus evacuation drill scheduled for September 17–19 and a short assembly to launch the school’s main elementary fundraiser next Friday.
The board did not take further action on the safety presentations; staff said the October drill will be coordinated with county agencies and that the district will continue regular drills and debriefs to refine procedures.
