School board weighs giving visitor concession stand to youth football and cheer program

The Waterloo Local Board of Education heard a recommendation to give the visitor concession stand to the youth football and cheer program so local teams can store equipment and play on a field with bleachers, the board president said.

The board president said the visitor stand has not been used since 2021 and that the district recorded $3,984 in visitor-stand revenue and $10,890 for the home stand in the last year both operated. "Youth Football Cheerleading approached us asking to take it over, offering to provide paint for the field and maintenance and repairs of the stand," the chair said.

A representative of the youth program told the board the group can supply paint and equipment and would prefer to play locally. "We were donating 6 5 gallons of paint," the resident said, adding that parking and lack of bleachers at current venues make local fields preferable.

The president framed the issue as a community-sharing decision, saying both athletics and music boosters provide important services. "My recommendation... would be to give the visitor stand to the football cheerleader," the chair said, while noting there had also been earlier interest from the music boosters.

Board materials and discussion referenced an agreement framework for Viking games football and cheer to use the concession stand and district fields; the chair said details would be finalized through the service-planning process.

Next steps: the board discussed formalizing the arrangement through a memorandum of understanding and confirming how maintenance, use schedules and revenue sharing would work. No roll-call vote on a transfer was recorded in the meeting transcript.
