Montreat Tree Board updates Treasure Tree map, sets walk and readies Tree City USA application

At the Oct. 14 meeting the Montreat Tree Board reviewed a redesigned Treasure Tree map and flyer and set an Oct. 29 Treasure Tree walk led by Jason Nance and Nancy Midget.
Elizabeth presented the updated map and said the board will publicize the walk and accept corrections to the map. Board discussion covered nomination procedures and the town’s concerns about excessive plaques and private information on older map versions. Members suggested setting a nominations timeline (proposed Jan. 31) so the Suwannee Valley Tree Alliance can evaluate candidate trees in clusters rather than making individual visits.
Tree City USA: the board discussed remaining eligible for Tree City USA designation and the associated paperwork. The Chair said the program requires an application with documentation of annual tree‑management activities; the application window for 2025 closes Dec. 31. Members agreed to prepare the application, gather records and consider tying an Arbor Day proclamation to the Oct. 29 events to meet Tree City USA requirements.
Next steps: staff will follow up to update web content and coordinate with the Landcare site; the board will set a nomination deadline and prepare the Tree City USA materials before the Dec. 31 submission date.
