In a recorded video message the mayor said the decision was not impulsive: he and his wife recently welcomed a grandson and the couple are helping with childcare, and changes at the mayor's airline (including more overnight red-eye flights) have made it harder for him to perform mayoral duties to his own standard. "I will be resigning as your mayor on the last day of August," he said, adding that the timing allows a month and a half for turnover and to finish key items such as annexation deliberations and the budget cycle.
Hushauer said Council President Tim (speaker 1) will serve as acting mayor until a special election is held and that the person elected will finish the remainder of his term. Several council members thanked Hushauer for his years of service and congratulated him on becoming a grandfather.
