Knox County Commission approves consent items; hears updates on dispatch hiring, cybersecurity and projects

The Knox County Commission voted unanimously to approve the consent agenda at its May 13 meeting, approving minutes, departmental reports, warrants and reserve withdrawals by a recorded vote of "three in favor, none opposed."
During commissioners' reports and the county administrator’s update, staff briefed the commission on several administrative items:
- Dispatch hiring: The county administrator reported a full-time dispatch hire was completed that morning and said a posting for a permanent dispatch director position would be issued by June 15. The administrator said the staffing change should reduce overtime and that the county is exploring a revised schedule for dispatchers.
- TOC training backlog: Commissioners discussed a statewide shortage and long waiting list (reported in the meeting as about 15 months) for TOC (terminal operator certificate) classes that certify dispatch operators; commissioners said they would pursue short-term measures and longer-term legislative or funding solutions.
- Cybersecurity and grants: The county administration is pursuing cybersecurity grant funding to bolster IT defenses and training; commissioners also discussed a regional briefing and vendor resources being offered through the Maine County Commissioners Association.
- Projects and contracts: The administrator said the county’s solar project has connected to the grid and that an LED conversion began this week. Staff described ergonomics work in the dispatch center and plans to consult peer counties about walking-pad policies and other wellness measures. The administrator also described ongoing work reviewing old contracts and opioid-settlement-related FOAs.
No new ordinances or formal contract awards were approved during this meeting beyond the consent items; commissioners indicated follow-up work and additional meetings would be scheduled where needed.
