Broken Bow council OKs up to $65,000 in KENO funds for community betterment projects

City Administrator David Schmidt told the council he found a KENO balance of about $151,000 and proposed using up to $65,000 to fund beautification projects. Schmidt said the projects under consideration include flowers and mulch around the square, new welcome signs, repairs to signs at Melham and holiday lighting. Mayor Rod Sonnichsen noted that using KENO funds for these items reduces the need to use tax dollars.
Councilmember Russ Smith moved to approve Resolution 2025-06; Councilmember Travis Kleeb seconded. The motion carried on a roll-call vote with Smith, Kleeb, Wamsley and Holland voting aye.
The resolution allows the city to allocate KENO revenue to specified community-betterment items; the council did not specify exact vendor contracts or a project-by-project budget during the meeting and left implementation details to city staff.
