Brandywine board swears in members, elects officers and adopts student cell phone policy; multiple executive-session items approved

The Brandywine School District Board of Education opened its regular meeting with swearing-in ceremonies, elected officers for the coming year and handled a series of routine and executive-session items.

The board swore in returning and newly elected members and welcomed Kristen Bruce to the board. During annual nominations, Ralph Ackerman nominated Jason Heller for board president; with no additional nominations, the board voted to elect Heller unanimously. John Skrobot was the sole nominee for vice president and was elected by voice vote.

During board business the consent agenda was approved, the monthly personnel report was accepted (as discussed in executive session), and an employee matter (26022) and student matters (9a and 9b) were approved following executive-session consideration. The board also took six separate votes on complaint 26-1000: it granted alleged violations 1 and 2 and accepted remedies 1, 2a, 2b and 2c. A roll call on remedy 2b recorded one opposition (Schroeder); other motions were carried by voice vote.

On policy, the board completed a second reading of student cell phone policy 06.16 and voted to adopt the policy, which will take effect at the start of the school year as discussed by the policy review committee.

The meeting concluded after the board accepted the June monthly financial report subject to audit and the chair announced the annual board retreat on July 27 and upcoming regular meetings on Aug. 17, Sept. 28 and Oct. 19.
