Council members heard an informational report July 14 on a land-use restriction agreement the city must approve for a state grant the Friends of the Mining Rollo Jameson Museums applied for on behalf of the museum.
Cass told the council the agreement would ensure the city retains ownership of specific museum facilities for a stated period so that grant funds are used to improve and maintain the property rather than funding work on property that might later be sold. The draft agreement is under review by the city attorney, and Cass said museum leadership (including the museum-board president) will appear at a future meeting to present details.
Cass and other staff said maintenance concerns remain: Shannon (maintenance manager) flagged potential unfunded liabilities elsewhere on the property and staff scheduled a follow-up meeting with museum leadership to confirm the scope of work the grant would cover and whether other repairs should be prioritized. Council members noted that the grant language may constrain how money can be used and that staff should confirm allowable expenditures before final action.
Next steps: staff and museum leadership will meet to clarify scope and budgets; the draft land-use restriction agreement will return to council for action after city-attorney review.
