The Pittsylvania County Board of Zoning Appeals voted July 13 to grant Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative a special-use permit to establish a public facility with offices and a storage yard on approximately 38.034 acres along East Gretna Road, Route 40 and Telegraph Route (Route 685) in the Bannister Election District.
Miss Smith read the application and staff summary, describing the request as utility-related operations including office space, material and equipment storage, transformer storage and covered vehicle storage. She told the board the Planning Commission voted 5-0 on July 7 to recommend approval and that staff recommended two conditions: “a vegetative buffer with minimum width of 20 feet shall be maintained along all portions of the property boundary that adjoin R-1 zone properties,” and “a fence with a minimum height of 4 feet shall be installed and maintained around the full perimeter of the stormwater pond to restrict access and ensure safety.”
Tim Bolte, representing Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, told the board, “This project is to replace the existing office that we currently have in the town of Gretna.” He said the cooperative had outgrown the current site and declined to describe specific future uses of the existing office property, offering to answer questions from the board.
After the presentation and a short period for public comment — during which no members of the public signed up to speak — board member Mister Yaman moved to approve the special-use permit. Mister Shelton seconded the motion. A board member clarified that the motion included the planning commission and staff conditions; the chair confirmed the conditions were part of the motion. The chair then called the vote and announced, “Motion carries,” approving the permit. The transcript does not record individual roll-call votes.
The permit approval incorporates the two conditions read into the record by staff. The meeting adjourned after the board carried the motion.
