Staff unveils interactive zoning map to help residents compare current and proposed zoning

Purcellville planning staff demonstrated a new interactive zoning map and website tools intended to help property owners see how proposed zoning changes would affect their parcels.
"This kinda shows both, the current and proposed zoning over here," Kendall demonstrated, explaining that users can search an address and "see your current zoning regulations and then the proposed zoning regulations." The tool includes a swipe feature to compare current and proposed layers.
Director Wilkes told the commission the map was developed after dozens of citizen inquiries during the public hearing process and that the town hired GIS staff (Reza Gazzvini) to build the feature. Staff stressed the interactive map is not the legal zoning instrument: "This doesn't replace the official zoning map... it's not a legal instrument," Wilkes said, adding the proposed layer will become current once the ordinance is adopted.
Commissioners asked whether the map could link to parcel and tax data; staff said the map could be connected to the county dataset and that additional links and features (e.g., parade routes, snow‑plow maps) are being added. Staff said once the ordinance is adopted the proposed layer will be converted to the current layer on the site.
