KPSAA adjusts E2 grade calculation to include first‑quarter grades

Executive Secretary Vaughn Dosko told the board Sept. 26 that the district has adjusted the E2 grade check calculation to begin including first‑quarter grades so that the E2 check better reflects cumulative semester performance.
Byron Weeks and Nikiski activities director Mr. Hooper raised concerns that the change could give the appearance of changing eligibility rules without broad stakeholder notification and questioned whether short grading windows (E2/E4) misrepresent semester grades. Dosko and Jesse Settlemyer said the primary change is the start date for E2 and that teachers’ differing grade‑weighting methods (weighted categories versus total points) create much of the confusion.
The board agreed to create a document with visual examples explaining how the cumulative calculation maps to semester grades and to distribute that to high schools to improve stakeholder understanding.
No formal policy vote was taken; the adjustment will be communicated to schools and stakeholders in the coming weeks.
