The Victoria Town Council voted on June 9 to raise the town's real-estate tax rate from $0.18 to $0.20 per $100 of assessed value and increase the meals tax from 5% to 6%, then adopted the FY27 budget.
Councilmember James G. Elam, Jr. moved the tax changes and Councilmember Ronald Mattox seconded the motion. Voting recorded: Mayor Allen D. Smith Aye; Councilmember James G. Elam, Jr. Aye; Councilmember Christopher Garrett No; Councilmember Chris Gill Aye; Councilmember Sandra Jones Aye; Councilmember Ronald Mattox Aye; Councilmember Johnnie Brame Absent. The motion carried.
Council then voted to approve and appropriate the FY27 budget. The adoption carried on the record with all present councilmembers voting in the affirmative; Councilmember Brame was absent.
Town Manager Rodney Newton presented no line-item changes in the minutes read at the meeting; council did not attach new conditions to the budget in the June 9 action. No direct statements of planned new spending priorities were recorded in the minutes for the tax revenue. The council record shows the tax and budget votes were separate motions taken sequentially during the meeting.
The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for July, when other items including a draft Dog and Nuisance Animal ordinance are set for public hearing.
