At its work session the East Grand Forks City Council heard several routine requests: a conditional hire for a police applicant, a request to declare a vehicle surplus for auction and details of an Aug. 15 memorial run that will include a downtown evening concert.
Police Chief Hedlund asked council to consider conditional approval to hire Grant Eckerson, saying the applicant "passed" the physical agility course, has upcoming medical and psychological exams and still must take a POST test. Hedlund said conditional approval could allow Eckerson to start up to two weeks earlier and help fill a position that has been vacant about a year.
The chief also requested authorization to declare one additional department vehicle surplus for sale at auction and said the vehicle arrived sooner than expected.
On the special-event application for Aug. 15, staff member Renee said organizers submitted insurance, a route map and DOT paperwork; the event adds a downtown evening band with outdoor alcohol and will require short‑term street closures and barricades. Police and public‑works staff plan to stage barricades, post detour signs and assign one extra officer to the event. Council members asked whether the stage would be placed in the apartment parking lot adjacent to the event and raised concerns about resident parking; staff said they would verify whether the VFW parking lot (used in prior years) will be used instead.
The council moved to adjourn later in the session; a member (Ben Pugczynski) moved the motion, it was seconded and the motion passed on a voice vote.
