District reports fewer seclusions, stable restraint counts and emphasizes training and parent notification

A staff presenter (speaker 11) updated the board on behavioral‑incident data and procedures, saying seclusion decreased at the elementary level by roughly 10 incidents while restraint counts stayed similar to last year.

"For physical restraints, we stayed approximately the same at the elementary school, but we do have a reduction in the number of students that were actually involved in those restraints," the presenter said. He added that seclusion decreased by "approximately 10" at the elementary level.

The presenter explained that state law limits when seclusion or restraint may be used — "it is always a last resort" — and that staff are trained in nonverbal crisis intervention. He said the district requires one trained staff member per building and typically trains many more (30–60 across the district). When incidents occur, the district notifies parents, files an incident report and convenes a prompt building‑level debrief.

Board members asked whether repeated incidents triggered Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings; staff said repeated incidents prompt IME/IEP reviews and adjustments to positive behavior intervention plans.

The presenter noted staff safety training also emphasizes ways to remove themselves from harm to reduce staff injuries during incidents.
