District staff and committee members presented a year-and-a-half policy revision effort to embed restorative practices across the Eagle County School District and described plans to roll the program districtwide.
Dr. Katie Jarno said restorative practices were expanded after COVID and that the work so far has been fully grant-funded. She emphasized prevention components, teacher-managed restorative conversations and plans to staff "reflection rooms" in high schools as an in-school alternative to out-of-school suspension. "Restorative brings us back to when there's an infraction, we're looking at what was the effect of this? Can you take responsibility for this and how do you fix it?" Jarno said.
Committee members explained the five-year implementation plan, training schedule for staff and next steps to align a discipline matrix with restorative language. Presenters said most staffing for the initial reflection-room work would be grant-funded and that the district is not reallocating existing FTE to fund the program.
Several board members and community members asked about parent engagement, evaluation data and school-resource-officer training; staff said parent education and coordination with SROs are part of the plan and that evaluation work has produced promising middle-school results on reduced infractions and suspensions.
The presentation was informational; policy revisions are still being reviewed and no action was requested at the meeting.
