Clifton council adopts cigarette tax increase and 2% meals tax after public hearing

There were no public comments on the cigarette-tax proposal; when the meals-tax scope was discussed, Councilmember Steve Effros confirmed that local scouts would be excluded from the requirement.
After a brief regular meeting, the council moved into a closed session for personnel and legal matters and later reconvened. Councilmember Steve Effros moved to adopt the ordinance changes; Vice Mayor Regan McDonald seconded the motion. The roll-call vote recorded Ayes from McDonald, Screen, Hess, Peterson and Effros.
Council members discussed directing any new revenues toward town improvements and capital needs as part of FY2025 budget planning; Treasurer Wax recommended the council and staff review the proposed capital budget and consult with the town attorney to ensure any allocations comply with applicable funding rules. The council will continue budget deliberations at its June 4 meeting.
Action taken at the May 7 meeting was recorded in the minutes and certified following return from a closed session.
