The Eagle County School District board voted Wednesday to pilot a proposed "Seal of Civic Engagement" for the 2026–27 school year, a program designed to recognize students who demonstrate civic knowledge, leadership and community partnerships.
Tia Luck, who presented the proposal, said the pilot would include two elementary schools, two middle schools and invitations for all four high schools to participate. The program would emphasize equitable student leadership and require a culminating community-impact project for participating students. "Community partnerships is a really important piece of this," Luck said while describing the criteria and the planned design-team work.
The pilot is funded with $10,000 in seed money identified from the Education Foundation of Eagle County; Luck said the plan would provide $1,000 per sponsoring school and compensate staff for after-hours duties. Board member Lou moved to approve the pilot; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote, motion passes 6–0.
Board members noted the value of student voice and the district's prior work on stewardship and student leadership when supporting the pilot. The board asked staff to proceed with selecting pilot schools and establishing a design team and metrics for evaluating the pilot.
Vote: Approval of the Eagle County School District Seal of Civic Engagement pilot — mover: Lou (speaker 2); second: Harry (speaker 4); vote: 6–0.
