Dr. Casey Summers welcomed as Phil Quellman retires from Eagle County School District

The Eagle County School District Board of Education on Wednesday honored outgoing superintendent Phil Quellman and welcomed Dr. Casey Summers, who began his transition into the district on June 1.
Quellman, who told the board this week that Friday, June 12, would be his last day in practice and June 30 his final official day, reflected on seven years leading the district and thanked staff, partner organizations and community members for their support. "I love Eagle County School District. I love all of you guys. Thank you for letting me serve in this capacity," Quellman said.
Board members and former trustees credited Quellman with several accomplishments, including expanding employee housing, bolstering school-based mental-health services and steering the district through the COVID pandemic. Former board member Fernando Almanza said Quellman "kept the boat upright when it mattered the most." Several speakers also highlighted Quellman's work on safety, the district's bond initiatives and early-childhood program growth.
Dr. Casey Summers, introduced at the meeting and later speaking from the dais, thanked the board for the warm welcome and said he is looking forward to listening and meeting staff and community partners. "I'm very, very excited to be in great company, in a great community," Summers said, adding that he anticipates a summer of relationship-building and learning.
The board used the public portion of the meeting to offer formal thanks and wishes for Quellman's retirement and to introduce Summers to community leaders he will meet in the coming weeks.
No formal action related to the superintendent transition was required at the meeting; the session concluded with board members noting transition events and adjournment.
