Council members stressed the importance of defining exactly what types of cutting the town would permit and of getting cost estimates for surveys and consultant work.
Councilman David Buchanan said the town should seek bids from consultants to determine fees and to make clear what the council wants evaluated. Councilman R.B. Henderson cautioned against clear‑cutting because of erosion and other impacts. Town Manager Cecile Rosenbaum recommended the council first review the list of consultant contacts that Mayor Fullen circulated and then decide how many areas to include in any initial evaluation; she noted the town could amend the budget to cover preliminary work if the council chose to proceed.
Planning Commission Chairman Matt Prater told the council the commission could request state agency information at low or no cost under its statutory role, and recommended reaching out to the Department of Forestry. On a motion by Buchanan, seconded by Ryan Comer, the council voted unanimously to authorize Prater to contact the Virginia Department of Forestry and other state agencies to gather information about surveys, access, and options for selective harvesting.
Town staff provided VDOF materials and tract maps (Tract SMY13‑012 and WAS25‑034) showing stand labels and acreage; the materials list multiple stands that “need examination for possible timber sale” and identify stands previously harvested in 2010. Council members said any consultant the town engages should advise on cutting options and safeguards and that planning‑level review should precede any contract or sale.
Next steps: the planning commission chair will reach out to state forestry staff and report back to the council with findings and any recommended next steps for surveys or consultant procurement. The council made no commitment to sell timber or to a harvesting method at this meeting.
