At its meeting the Albany County School District No. 1 board considered a batch of policy items, approving several and forwarding others for additional refinement.
The board adopted policy 2035 (capitalization and inventory) on third reading and policy 4025 (student use of cellular telephones and smart devices) as presented. Trustees also approved the second reading of policy 40-50 (prohibition of deepfake images and other media), and advanced policy 40-55 (graduation ceremonies) on second reading after a substantive discussion about cultural and religious regalia and whether the policy's disruption standard is specific enough.
One trustee raised concerns that the graduation policy language allowing tribal, cultural or religious regalia "but not replacing the cap and gown if it is not likely to cause a substantial disruption" could be applied unevenly and suggested tighter wording; other trustees counseled caution about over-defining "substantial disruption" and asked policy and governance to wordsmith the language before third reading.
The board also approved the first reading of policy 30-16 (temporary virtual education days and inclement-weather days), a state-recommended change that allows temporary virtual education days for an entire district, an individual building or program, or an individual student in exceptional circumstances.
What happens next: the graduation policy language will return to the policy and governance committee for possible rewording; adopted policies will be posted per normal implementation steps.
