Clifton council approves $1,500 grant match, two small-business use permits and polling-place move

Clifton — At its Jan. 16 meeting, the Clifton Town Council approved a series of routine administrative and local measures, including a $1,500 town match for an NVCT invasive‑plant mitigation grant, two small‑business use permits and relocating the Clifton Town precinct polling place back to Town Hall.
Vice Mayor Regan McDonald moved, and Councilmember Steve Effros seconded, a motion to provide $1,500 in town funds as the local match to the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust’s $5,000 grant for a 3–5 year plan to mitigate invasive plants along the Flood Plain Park trail; the roll‑call vote was unanimous (Hess: Aye; McDonald: Aye; Screen: Aye; Peterson: Aye; Davis: Aye; Effros: Aye).
The council accepted Planning Commission recommendations to approve a Use Permit for Purple Hayes Gallery (Rebecca Hayes) and a Use Permit for Apex Electric Service, Inc. (Stanley Scott). Councilmember Steve Effros moved to accept the commission’s recommendations; Mayor Tom Peterson seconded and both motions carried by poll, 6–0.
On elections administration, Mayor Peterson moved (seconded by Councilmember Jay Davis) to approve Fairfax County’s recommendation to relocate the Clifton Town precinct polling place to Town Hall to improve parking and access; the motion passed by poll, 6–0.
The council authorized Mayor Peterson, Vice Mayor McDonald and Treasurer Lisa Wax to sign town checks and approved the Treasurer’s report as presented (motion approved by poll, 6–0). The Parks Committee reported that Dominion Energy plans to cut or remove 18 trees in the 8‑acre park in mid‑March, which may close the park to the public for about three days.
Items not acted on: The council took no action on creating a paid part‑time 'Open Spaces Administrator' position (proposed $100 annual salary) and did not yet form the Finance or Revenue Producing committees; the J2 Engineers construction agreement for Streetscape was tabled for further information.
