Council hears Streetscape update and VDOT pushback; speed‑limit options discussed

Town officials and committee representatives updated the Council on Streetscape and traffic safety matters at the Dec. 5 meeting. Geri Yantis reported that VDOT’s Northern Virginia district office has advocated to the Special Project Committee but the VDOT central office has not agreed to reset the project schedule; a meeting with central office was scheduled for Dec. 15 to pursue next steps.
Vice Mayor Regan McDonald reported that VDOT is generally not in favor of posting speed limits under 25 miles per hour on state‑controlled streets and suggested the Town consider alternatives such as requesting additional police support for enforcement. Councilmember Steve Effros said he would consult the Town Attorney about whether existing electronic speed signs could be equipped with speed cameras as an enforcement mechanism.
On local traffic safety for turning movements, Vice Mayor McDonald proposed moving planters to improve sight lines for drivers turning from Chapel Street and Chapel Road. Council members agreed to defer additional Streetscape expenditures until outstanding issues with VDOT are resolved.
The Council approved a Mayor-signed letter acknowledging a public hearing on the Streetscape project, with the Mayor authorized to make minor revisions before signing.
