Clifton council backs Fairfax Invasives Removal Alliance campaign

The Clifton Town Council on June 4 voted to support the Fairfax Invasives Removal Alliance (FIRA) after a proposal from the Committee on the Environment.
The committee’s proposal, presented by members and supported in the meeting packet, requested that Clifton join the countywide coalition advocating for a comprehensive strategy to address invasive plants that damage tree canopy and habitat. The proposal noted town expenditures in FY2024 exceeding $1,250 for invasive-vine removal and described FIRA’s goals — including a public information campaign, workforce development and potential state advocacy — as carrying no direct cost to the town.
Councilmember McDonald moved to approve the COTE FIRA request supporting removal of invasive species; the motion passed by poll, 5-0. Council discussion noted the Clifton Betterment Association had already agreed to sign onto the campaign and encouraged coordination with county initiatives.
The town will be listed among supporting organizations on FIRA’s developing website and will coordinate with the Committee on the Environment for outreach and implementation steps.
