Clifton council moves forward on caboose repaint; asks CBA to consider funding support

The Clifton Town Council voted Aug. 6 to proceed with the single bid procured by the Town Administrator for repainting the town’s caboose and asked the Clifton Business Association (CBA) to consider financial support.
Town Administrator Laura Jane Cohen told the council the vendor who provided a bid was willing to complete the work and that other vendors had returned no-bid responses. Vice Mayor Regan McDonald moved to move forward with the bid with an aim to complete the work by the end of September; the motion passed by roll call, 4–0.
Councilmember Steve Effros then moved that the council formally request Mayor Tom Peterson speak to the CBA about supporting or helping to pay for the caboose renovation; the motion was seconded and approved by poll 4–0. CBA President Michelle Stein asked for the quotes the town has gathered and noted that the association’s volunteers have carried out other town projects, such as the recent painting of the Primitive Baptist Church. She said the CBA includes members with an interest in trains who might offer expertise.
Mayor Peterson said he would attend the next CBA meeting to discuss collaboration and noted he believes the caboose could be a showpiece for the town. The council also discussed the caboose as a potential future visitor center or museum, but agreed the immediate aim was to address exterior paint and window repairs rather than undertake a conversion.
Next steps: Town Administrator to provide collected quotes to the CBA; council and CBA to discuss cost-sharing and schedule with goal of work completion before Clifton Day in late September/early October.
