Friends group and trails committee outline volunteer drive, kayak safety course and May events

Members and Friends representatives told the board they are organizing outreach and events to recruit volunteers for trail maintenance and park programs.

"May 10 we have the Water Trail social at Grace Bridal," S6 said, adding that the Friends plan to provide displays, a donation box and a small potluck to raise awareness and recruit volunteers. S6 also described a worldwide paddle film festival on May 14 and two sea‑kayak safety days on May 17–18, and urged members to consider schedule conflicts with the regular board meeting.

Friends representatives also described operational assistance: the Friends would pay for two temporary ACCers for three months at 40 hours per week while they finalize details, and they are coordinating search‑and‑rescue training with a trainer named Carter. "Carter's gonna provide some of the training," a Friends representative said.

The trails committee reported a volunteer recruitment event set for May 17 (4–6 p.m.) in the same meeting room; the committee plans speakers, handouts and a raffle whose entry requires completing a volunteer signup form so organizers can build a volunteer contact list.

Why it matters: Volunteer staffing and training are key to maintaining remote trail infrastructure and outhouses, and the board flagged the need for clear signage and volunteer maintenance agreements so visitors understand which facilities are volunteer‑maintained.
