Kachemak Bay Watershed Council reorganizes as nonprofit, tells advisory board it will draft watershed plan

During public comment, Al Shepherd told the advisory board the Kachemak Bay Watershed Council has reorganized as a nonprofit and is preparing a watershed management plan for the marine and freshwater parts of the bay.
"We're going to be working on, primarily, putting together a watershed management plan for the Kachemak Bay Watershed and submitting that to stakeholders and putting it out there in the community to try to get some input, approval, endorsement, particularly by state agencies, ADF and G and DNR," Shepherd said. He said the council will review permits and planning documents that affect the bay and act as an oversight entity to monitor agency compliance with regulations and permit conditions.
Shepherd also said the newly formed council is recruiting board members and early projects will examine critical‑habitat permits and agency management practices. The speaker asked for assistance spreading the word and noted a state parks board member is on the newly reorganized council board.
The advisory board thanked Shepherd for the update. No formal action was taken by the advisory board on the watershed council report during the meeting; staff and board members noted the update for future coordination.
