The Barrington Select Board voted July 13 to reclassify one patrol-officer position to a patrol-sergeant position to improve supervisory coverage and give sergeants regular administrative days for training and evidence work.
Chief of Police (speaker) described multiple incidents where supervisory presence mattered — including a complex DUI response and a call that resulted in an in‑town death — and said the department’s supervisory staffing has been strained. He said adding a third patrol sergeant would allow six-day supervisory coverage with rotation and administrative time for essential tasks such as evidence handling and firearms training.
The chief presented a 'worst-case' budget impact scenario for the remainder of the year and told the board that amount — presented as a one-time remainder-of-year cost — can be absorbed within the current budget because of a longstanding open position that has not been filled. The board moved, seconded and passed a motion to authorize the reclassification with an effective date of Oct. 7, 2026.
Motion and vote: the motion to authorize the reclassification was moved from the floor; a second was recorded; the board voted unanimously by voice (individual recorded yeas during roll-call read-back). The chief said he will work with staff to manage the FY2027 impact and seek to minimize the recurring cost.
The Select Board did not direct additional policy changes in the meeting record; the action was recorded as a personnel classification change to take effect Oct. 7, 2026.
