Salem police report FY2026 totals and say extra patrols will enforce fireworks ban over July Fourth

Chief Greg Gurney presented the Police Department’s June activity report and FY2026 year-end totals at the Salem City Council meeting on July 1. For June the department recorded 15 arrests, 37 citations, 151 traffic stops, 415 calls for service and 19 traffic accidents. The Fire Department responded to 70 calls during the month.
Chief Gurney also summarized FY2026 year-end totals: 2,100 calls for service, 98 traffic accidents, 500 traffic stops, 210 citations, 165 arrests and 96 jail bookings. In advance of July Fourth, the chief said additional patrol officers would be on duty to enforce the city’s fireworks restrictions and that officers will utilize state forestry laws as part of enforcement.
Council members asked about how increased traffic stops and resulting arrests and jail bookings affect departmental performance metrics; Chief Gurney answered during the report. The department’s summertime enforcement plan was presented as a precaution tied to public safety and the city’s existing fireworks restrictions.
No formal action was taken on enforcement policy at the meeting.
