Broken Bow council adopts library vaping ban, raises multipurpose room fee; posts police chief opening

The Broken Bow City Council on Tuesday adopted a revised Broken Bow Public Library Physical Facilities Policy that bans vaping inside the library and raises the multipurpose room rental fee from $35 to $50 to cover cleaning and carpet maintenance. The vote was unanimous among the four councilmembers present.
Library Director Megan Svoboda told the council the policy changes were intended to address vaping on the premises and to ensure adequate funds for room upkeep. Councilmember Russ Smith moved to approve the policy and Councilmember Travis Kleeb seconded; Smith, Kleeb, Joe Wamsley and Paul Holland voted aye and the motion carried.
Earlier in the meeting the council approved a consent agenda that included approval of the Aug. 12 council minutes, an Aug. 14 budget workshop minutes, bills to date, and the July 2025 Treasurer's Report. Vendor payments and operating expenses listed in the packet totaled $176,086.84; biweekly payroll shown was $120,711.18, producing a Grand Total of $296,798.02. The consent agenda motion was moved by Joe Wamsley, seconded by Paul Holland, and approved by roll call (aye: Smith, Kleeb, Wamsley, Holland).
City Administrator David Schmidt said a planned post-meeting "show and tell" demonstration of a newly acquired ambulance was canceled because the ambulance was dispatched to a call just before the meeting. Schmidt also announced that the Police Chief position was posted internally that day and that application review would begin on Sept. 10, 2025.
Mayor Rod Sonnichsen announced an invitation for law enforcement officers and their families to the Blue Line Family Bash on Sept. 19, 2025, described in the meeting packet as an event organized by Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers at a private residence in Lincoln. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. and adjourned at 6:05 p.m.
