Union Point Fire Chief Will Wright signals resignation; mayor asks for written notice

Fire Chief Will Wright told the Union Point City Council at its June 10 meeting that he verbally intends to resign as Fire Chief effective July 1, 2025. Mayor Lanier Rhodes did not accept the verbal resignation during the meeting and asked Chief Wright to submit his resignation in writing and to consider extending the effective date for a few weeks. Chief Wright said he would provide a written letter and extend the resignation date.

The resignation discussion occurred on the same agenda that included council approval to enter an intergovernmental agreement consolidating fire protection services with Greene County beginning Oct. 1, 2025. Chief Wright told the council he would follow the council’s lead and work with the county as needed. The minutes record no formal action on the chief’s resignation at the meeting; the mayor requested written notice to finalize personnel records and transition planning.
